Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet informed of any harm in association with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A high-ranking political figure said the vandalism left him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he wrote on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in 2020.
